Alice Sullivan Newman

SARANAC LAKE - Alice Sullivan Newman, 87, of 23 Bloomingdale Avenue, died Friday, Jan. 26, 1996 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born Aug. 2, 1908 in Lake Clear, she was the daughter of John and Grace (Marshall) Sullivan.

Mrs. Newman taught school in Riverview in a one-room school prior to her marriage to V. Verdo Newman in 1931. She and her husband started Newman and Holmes with partner Rex Holmes in Saranac Lake in 1934. After her husband's death in 1957, Mrs. Newman continued to manage the business until her retirement in 1982.

Survivors include her son, Wayne Newman of Saranac Lake; a daughter, Linda Newman Taylor of Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Helen Tallman of Saranac Lake; a brother, Phillip Sullivan of Mooers; five grandchildren, Scott, Krista and Casey Colby, and Eric and Mary Alice Newman; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband; a daughter, Theresa, in 1962; two brothers, Bernard and Russell Sullivan; and five sisters, Kathryn, Bonnie, Rose, Marie and Dorothea. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake.

A Bible vigil will be held at 8 tonight. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bernard's Church with the Rev. Christopher Carrara officiating.' Interment will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery in May. Memorial donations may be made to the Saranac Lake Rescue Squad.
