SARANAC LAKE - Barbara M. Scheefer, 71, of 73 Olive St., died Wednesday, December 2, at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake.
She was born April 25, 1916, in Saranac Lake, the daughter of Bert and Kathryn (McGrain) Bishop.
A lifelong resident of Saranac Lake, she was a graduate of Saranac Lake High School and the New Hampshire School of Nursing, Concord, N.H.
She was a registered nurse for over 30 years, first employed by the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in New Hampshire, then the General Hospital of Saranac Lake, the Will Rogers Hospital and later the Uihlein Mercy Center before retiring in 1974.
She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society and was a member of the General Hospital of Saranac Lake Auxiliary. Mrs. Scheefer is survived by four sons, William G. Scheefer III, Robert K. Scheefer, and Thomas Scheefer, all of Saranac Lake, and David J. Scheefer of Ohio City, Colo.; and nine grandchildren .
Calling hours were scheduled to take place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Fortune Funeral Home, with a Bible vigil service at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Bernard's Church.
Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery.
Donations in Mrs. Scheefer's memory may be made to the North Country Home Services or the High Peaks Hospice in care of the funeral home.
