Helen Potter Lewis was related to the family of the Episcopal Bishop Henry Codman Potter, who had built a camp on Hawk Island in Lake Placid in 1899. Helen was Training Director of Filene's Department Store in Boston when she came down with TB. Mr. Filene graciously paid her half of her salary for the entire four years that she spent in various cure cottages in Saranac Lake, including the Erkander Cottage, hoping she would return to Filene's. Her physician was Dr. Lawrason Brown. Helen met Dr. Howlett, who worked with Dr. Warriner Woodruff, while curing in Saranac Lake, and they married in 1935. They moved to Laurel Heights TB Sanatorium in Shelton, Conn, where Dr. Howlett worked as a physician. Mr. Filene sent her a letter of congratulations on her marriage. There is a brick commemorating Helen Potter Lewis at the Trudeau Laboratory and Museum.
