I am sure that some of the Lake Clear residents, will remember Howard Welsh who until several years ago lived in Lake Clear. He was originally from Vermont and came Paul Smiths in the early 1940s, He left to go into the service, then returned in 1946, after serving in World World Two, to work for the Paul Smiths Power and Electric and then later Paul Smith's College. At Paul Smith's College, he was the head of the sawmill and was considered to be the best master sawyer. He cut all the timbers for Buxton Gym and did all the trusses far all the college buildings. Around 1955 he built his home here in Lake Clear where he and the former Edna Otis lived most of their lives. It is said that Howard made all the cabinets in that house as he was an excellent carpenter. In 1975 Howard retired from Paul Smith's to be able to enjoy his home. Around the early part of 1990, it was too much for him in his own home so he moved into the Riverside high rise in Saranac Lake. From there he went back to near Waterbury, Vt. to spend his final years with his family. Howard Welsh will be brought back to be interred at the Harrietstown Cemetery on May 22 at 12:30 p.m. Thank you goes to Ruth Hoyt, Eileen Crary and Clarence Lester Sr. for the above information.
