James E. Shaw was born on Upper Saranac Lake, the son of Samuel Shaw and Marie (Gauda) Shaw. He graduated from Saranac Lake High School and received a BS of chemical engineering from Clarkson College in Potsdam. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant JG in the Pacific. After the war, he worked as chief engineer at Sunmount VA Hospital; the family moved to Lewiston, when Sunmount closed.
