Thomas Jefferson Newbold was the founder of Dairy Dell; he served as president of the Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce and of the Rotary Club.

T. Jefferson Newbold Dies; A Civic Leader
T. Jefferson Newbold, former president of the Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce and of the Rotary Club and president of the milk distributing firm of Dairy-Dell, died this morning at 6:30 o'clock at Saranac Lake General Hospital after a long illness, an illness complicated by a recent heart attack.
Mr. Newbold was president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1956-57 and president of the Rotary Club in 1947. He was senior warden of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and a member of the OX-5 Flying club. During the days of the Ground Observer Corps, he was Chief Observer, in 1956, for Saranac Lake.
A direct descendant of President Thomas Jefferson, Mr. Newbold was born in Manchester, England, November 3, 1914. He was the godson of President Franklin D Roosevelt. His father was the late T. Jefferson Newbold.
The family moved to Boston when Mr. Newbold was about a year old and he attended schools there and later attended Groton School and Harvard College.
During World War II, Mr. Newbold was stationed at LaGuardia Field in New York City and was liaison officer between the Civil Air Patrol and the Navy.
His family had a summer home at Saranac Inn and following his war service Mr. Newbold moved to Saranac Lake to live. He purchased the A. C. Bartz dairy in 1945 and formed Dairy-Dell, Inc. Later he added other dairies to his operations.
Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Dell Mathis of Atlantic City, whom he married at Ventnor, N. J., on August 29, 1942, a son, T. Jefferson, II, of Saranac Lake, and his mother who resides in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Also surviving are two brothers Thomas M. of Lincoln, Mass., and H. Leroy of Concord Mass., and two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Lowe of Milton, Mass.; and Mrs. Sarah Krashmer of Andover, Mass. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with Rev. J. Reginald Butt officiating.
The body is reposing at the Fortune Funeral Home. Following the funeral services there will be cremation at Troy.
