NATIVE OF AUSABLE DIES AT LAKE CLEAR
LAKE CLEAR — Mrs. Josephine Otis, one of the earliest settlers of this village, passed away at 5 o'clock Monday afternoon at her home here. She had been in ill health for the past two years and confined to her bed for four weeks.
Mrs. Otis would have celebrated her 83rd birthday next month. For 10 years it has been the custom of residents to call upon her on that occasion and present the felicitations of the village.
Born March 25, 1853, at Ausable Forks, she came to Lake Clear at the age of 10. Her parents were Alexander and Mary LaBounty. Their first home was in a log cabin in this then sparsely settled community.
She grew up here and married Joseph Otis, a farmer and guide, eight children being born of the union, five of whom survive. They are three sons, Joseph of Old Forge, James and Romeyn of Lake Clear; two daughters, Mrs. Ida Manning of Saranac Lake and Mrs. Eunice Spear of this village.
Children who predeceased Mrs. Otis were _ formerly connected with the state fish hatchery here; Mrs. Ira Green, of Saranac Lake and Mrs. William Douglas of Saranac Inn.
Granchildren include Floyd Greene, Miss Ella Greene, Alfred and William Douglas and Mrs. James White, all of Saranac Lake; Gordon and Leo Manning of Syracuse; Miss Lillian Otis and Harlan Otis of Old Forge; Miss Jean Otis and Theodore Spear of Lake Clear, and Mrs. Leo Sawyer of Saranac Lake. There are also several great grandchildren.
The funeral services was held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the home here, the Rev. Ronald Straus, pastor of the Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial was In the Harrietstown Cemetery.
