• 3/31/2010 A resident is looking for information on the park at the corner of Ampersand and Broadway and stone pillar in the corner on the Ampersand side. He writes "We used to play there when we were kids, and there used to be a long circular driveway there. Any ideas??
    • We created a very brief article on the Adirondack Greenhouses that occupied that space back at the turn of the last century. We would be interested in further information on the greenhouses, and any other entities that occupied this spot.

  • 2/4/10 [email protected] noticed a photo of Washburn Cottage at 4 McClelland Street. Does anyone know anything of the history of this house? Seeing that it is on what was McClelland land, he wonders if it was occupied at one point by Garrie & Martha Washburn, the daughter of James McClelland.
  • 12/29/09 Colleen Bennett is looking for information on her grandmother, LaVerne Strough, who was a TB patient who lived in Saranac Lake from 1911- c. 1927.
    • LaVerne Strough's father, Arthur Strough, and her siblings moved here from Dolgeville, NY because she and her mother, Carrie Strough, had TB. Her mother was ill for a year or so before they moved and may not have made it to Saranac Lake.
      • Phill Greenland has found a LaVerne Strough in Graton, California in 1934 and a LaVerne C. Strough at University of Nebraska in 1936.
    • Arthur remarried Anna (Patterson) Strough sometime between 1913 and 1918. Her sister and brother-in-law, Hazel Strough Paye and Robert Paye, also lived here for many years.
    • Arthur Strough and his friend Joseph LaBeau were killed in a tragic car accident in April 1922 on Bloomindale Road near the Trudeau Sanitarium.

  • 4/20/09 Reviewers Club, a Saranac Lake women's organization that is 100 years old this year, is looking for descendants of its founder, Grace (Mrs. Ralph) Leonard. The family owned Leonard's Department Store and lived on Riverside Drive. Their daughter, Louise?, married a Dr. (Kyle?) Hardesty. They had a son named Kyle and a daughter, Mary Lou, and are believed to have moved to California.
    • Phill Greenland notes that there is a photographer named Kyle Hardesty in Burbank, California, who would be the grandson. A google search for "Kyle Hardesty" brings up 1500 hits, starting with http://www.kylehardesty.com/.
  • 3/30/09 A reader of "The Big Rich," a new book by Bryan Burrough about Texas oilmen, wants to know where John Henry Kirby's "mansion" called "Dixie Pines" was located. A 1921 directory in the Adirondack Collection of the Saranac Lake Free Library locates it on Upper Saranac Lake. Can anyone identify this camp?
    • 2/28/10 An undated sales brochure from the Clinton J. Ayres real estate company describes Dixie Pines Camp as "A gentleman's estate in one of America's greatest playgrounds." "Location: The approximately eight acres have a frontage of some six hundred feet on the west shore of Upper Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks. At this particular location, the shore line curves to the east around Gilpin Bay, so that the camp has the advantage of a desirable Southern exposure."
    • 10/20/11 "Dixie Pines" has now been identified as a small, private children's camp run for many years by the late Ted Blackmar as Camp Forestcraft. It is now run by an association of loyal former campers.
  • 3/17/09 A descendent of John Carrier (born in SL 1905) has shared some family albums with HSL (photos have been posted on the Wiki). He would like any information on the Trombley & Carrier mill, the Carrier family, or information on his Grandmother's family. Her name was Mary Ellen Colon (Carrier) born in Swanton, VT. The family lived on Franklin Avenue.
    • A fine obituary on John Carrier's father, Jack Carrier, has been added (thanks to the SL Library's Adirondack Room), and a smattering of information on the on the mill (thanks to the NNYLN online newspaper archive. We still need more on the mill, and we still have little information on Mary Ellen Carrier.
  • 3/17/09 A person is seeking information about his uncle, Ewald Wilcott, who lived in Saranac Lake in the late 1940s - early 50s. He ran a newspaper distribution center. He is hoping to find his uncle's old house when he comes to town. Does anyone remember Ewald and where he used to live?

    • And the Adirondack Room of the Saranac Lake Free Library has telephone directories that could be used for finding particular residences. For Franklin County residences (which this one is) they also have a list which allows one to get from the old street address to the new, post 911-system address. Mwanner

  • 3/9/09 A family member of the actor Mortimer J. Naughton — stage name Jack Norton — is seeking information about his stay here. According to on-line biographies, he specialized in a "comic drunk" routine and appeared in 81 films! He died October 15, 1958, in Saranac Lake. Since he was an actor, he may have stayed at Will Rogers. Does anyone remember him? Any information is welcome.
  • 3/9/09 A researcher is seeking information about an actress, Jeanne Eagels, who performed in Saranac Lake on December 3, 1912, in a play called "The Angelus" with actor, Harrington Reynolds. The researcher would like to know the name of the theater, and any other information. He especially hopes someone may have a copy of the playbill. Apparently location shooting was done in the Saranac Lake area in September/October 1916 for her film, "The World and the Woman. Any information about that as well would also be much appreciated.
